The Salvation Army in the United States has a National Headquarters and is then divided into four territories. Each territory has a commander who operates under the general policies set by International Headquarters in London, England.  Territories are divided into divisions, with a divisional commander. Each division has a number of corps (churches) and other Salvation Army centers.
Before you give; Demand to see your local SA's - IRS form 990!
CFC ruling 88-1 states: Organizations that are not required to file IRS Form 990 with the IRS must nonetheless submit a completed copy of that form with their application for national or local eligibility.”

They have only made one units 990 available for a reason!

The Colonel said...
I have been with The Salvation Army for many, many years. We have it downpat! We preach with tears in our eyes and state the horrible atrocities of the lonely widows and while your’e at it, how about writin me a check for $10,000. No one will challenge the army, no one, we can do what we want, when we want it and laugh all the way to the bank. What suckers we have made out of the American public, but thanks for the ride, it’s been great, my retirement package was sweet too.

Ditto. As someone inside the organization for many years, I guarantee you are correct in not supporting this organization (SA). They are as phony as can be. Richest charity in America (that’s a lot of money), always “poor mouthing” and begging for more. They are exempt (as a church!) from filing disclosures on taxes/income to government. If I were to guess, I’d say
about 80-85% of their private donations (the red kettles, mail appeal, begging corporations, etc) go to church activities, like paying for the minister’s needs (each city has numerous couples assigned there) like their house (not a hut, believe me! look in your online tax assessor or treasurer listing locally if you can, run “salvation army” and “the salvation army” and drive by their housing for the “poor” ministers) and all expenses. What you and I pay for is all free to them-everything they want! Oh, and their wives/kids too!
Yes, they discriminate against gays, and women, and minorities (few if any ministers/church members are black), AND they treat their employees badly, like they are slaves (I feel for the ARC guy, I have seen that before myself…).
The old school SA was good and decent, but they changed in the 80’s, got greedy and too big-now they just suck.
"The Salvation Army wanted the White House to issue a regulation that would protect government-funded religious charities from state and local laws barring workplace discrimination, including discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. What exactly is going on with the Salvation Army? Are they openly discriminating against gays and lesbians, women or other minorities? And if they are, should they be receiving federal funds, or worse, taxpayers' money to perpetuate their behavior? Absolutely not. " Rodney Jay C. Salinas
Here's one SA units IRS form 990
The Salvation Army’s RED KETTLES you see in front of Walmart & other locations, are a 6 week church fundraising campaign (the church, aka cops community centers, are not self-sustaining) for a Salvationist church, that primarily caters to its Salvationist members, a lot of which are on the payroll. Would people still give knowing this? Wouldn’t they just give to their church... so they could expand its outreach programs?

At a glance:
Each local Salvation Army Corps (aka church) community center has a red kettle campaign (with a few exceptions). The money raised will be used to fund that centers (church) budget for the year. A very large present of donations are not going to help the poor, but are paying operating cost...i.e. officers and staff salaries, building cost and maintenance (its intentional to have the centers (churches) look poverty stricken), cars and/or vans, gas, office supplies, church functions, uniforms, household furnishings- for the officers etc..

Most of the bell ringers are hired as seasonal help. They are very intentional in who they hire, appearance is everything (poverty profiling)… someone considered to be, or who looks to be- low class, poor or in need…. Thus stimulating your emotions; pimping your allegiance to the cause.

The Salvation Army does use some of the donated money to assist people; however the percentage of money used is very small compared to the donations received.

The Salvation Army is not required to file their statistics because their a church. So it is not possible to make an evaluation of their efficiency as a charity. However, the AIP has posted a report on them at <http://www.charitywatch.org/articles/salvarmy.html> which gives them high marks for their finances, and low marks on their governance (mostly due to lack of an independent board and transparent reporting).

Did you know: The Nanaimo Salvation Army charges the homeless for their lunch and dinner meals?
"Shocking to say the least. Charging the homeles for meals,is NOT ACCEPTABLE!! Perhaps there should be an investigation into the disbursement of funding. Would be interesting to know how many $ go to wages, overhead, etc. As for paying persons to collect for kettle drives, this also is not acceptable when there are people willing to donate their time.  People who have applied to volunteer and have been overlooked or ignored. I am truly shocked by these reports and will certainly look for another "Charitable Organization" to make my donations too,"  .Jean MacMicking
